Microsoft's new release of Office 2010 provides a plethora of new exciting features.  Here is a brief overview of some:
  • Connecting and co-authoring capabilities enabling colleagues to work on files simultaneously with multiple people in different locations.
  • Assortment of mulit-media features allowing not only photo editing but video editing.
  • Ribbon customization allowing you to move and add controls to suit your needs.
Excel
To make things easier when utilizing pivot tables, Excel 2010 introduced a feature called a "slicer" which brings a snapshot view of a pivot table to the current worksheet.   The "slicer" acts like a filter that can be applied to charts and tables to sort the results in a custom manner.  The slicer can also be shared and lets you review the data without having to manipulate the table.
Another interesting new feature is "sparklines".  Sparklines are tiny charts that fit into a cell and allow you to create a graphical representation image right next to the actual data cell providing data visualization. Another new feature is "protected view".  Typically in today's environment spreadsheets resign on the network (very rarely on anyone's desktop) which is good for backups and disaster recovery planning but not so good when infected with malware and viruses.  The new protected view feature prevents editing of downloaded content without your acknowledgement.

PowerPoint
New features include improved picture and video editing features.   Effects include trimming, fades, reflections, shadows not only for photos but also for video editing and several new SmartArt designs for documents or slides.
You can embed and personalize videos with your presentation.   The embedded video file can be customized by adding video triggers and styles.

Word
The photo-editing tools in Word (and PowerPoint) have become much more sophisticated.   They allow you to apply artistic effects (similar to Photoshop, etc.) within Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  You can even review a thumbprint preview image prior to applying the effect.  There is also contextual spell-checking, and cut-and-paste enhancements
Outlook
Microsoft improved the tracking and managing of e-mail conversations.   It compresses your long email threads into a few conversations that can be categorized, filed, ignored or cleaned up within a few clicks.
