Weathering the Storm
 June 2010

lightning As we have all braced our businesses over the last two years to weather against the current economic tide, we must also prepare our companies physically to shoulder any real life disaster scenario including server down situations, virus/hacker attacks, disk crashes, or power outages especially as we head into Florida's Hurricane season.

How can you protect your business and ensure that you are thoroughly prepared to weather any storm, whether it is man-made like a virus attack or a natural disaster like a major hurricane?   Business continuity depends on minimum downtime and full data recovery.  How much data can you afford to lose?   How much downtime can your business tolerate?

There is often an increased number of service calls after severe weather or power outages.   Does your network have the adequate backup systems in place to order to safeguard against data loss and downtime?

Some ways to help ensure continuity during downtimes are:

 1) Back up all critical data for your organization…and test to ensure you can recover it.   Some data to remember include:

 a. Sales (customers, key prospects, opportunities)

 b. Finance (financial totals, detailed transaction histories)

 c. Operations (schedules, inventory locations, values)

 2) Have a Call List in case of emergencies.  Create a call tree so that everyone on the team knows who to call with questions, and has their afterhours contact information.

3) Determine a Secondary Site for Operations, if your current location becomes inaccessible.  Have a detailed Procedure Plan and store off-site.

4) Define which organizational units are critical & required.   Have a plan on how they can continue to operate to keep baseline business running.

Businesses of all types are facing unprecedented challenges to keep more information available -- all the time.   Data is increasingly critical in today's competitive market place.  The costs of downtime and lost data are escalating.
